How to Score Stylish & Unique Furniture on Craigslist

I love Craig and his lists. Thank you, Craig, you handsome and noble genius. Here's some tips to scoring good furniture on Craigslist if you have a tight budget, or just love the finding a unique item and making it work in your space.

1. SEARCH EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED.

My friend recently moved into a small Manhattan apartment with her boyfriend, and while their closet was fairly spacious, it only had a single rod. Not even a shelf above the closet rod. This left a ton of  unused space above and below their hanging clothes. I searched some affordable closet organization options on Ikea, and found the system that would work best for them. Quick Craigslist search of this exact piece (typed 'Ikea Algot'), and viola! There was one on the Upper East Side ready for her.

Doing some research and figuring out exactly what you want first makes it a lot easier to see if that same item is available in your neck of the woods for even cheaper.

2. SEARCH YOUR STYLE

What style are you going for? Bohemian? Mid Century? Rustic? Industrial? Traditional?  Here are some great items I found, just by typing the word 'bohemian'.

3. SEARCH YOUR FAVORITE STORES

I'm really loving World Market, West Elm, and Anthropologie right now. Here's some great pieces I found using their store name.  Is it possible to have romantic feelings for a chair? Yes. Yes it is. I see you - emerald, wingback, arm chair. You saucy minx.

4. SEARCH FOR DESIGN ELEMENTS AND TRENDS YOU LIKE

This tip is for those who have more time to spare and aren't as desperate to find something right away. Some refer to this process  as "online shopping", but do this on Craigslist, and I consider it "fine art."  Examples of specific design elements or trends to search: Plaid, stripes, leather, leopard print, bows, lace. Recently I've been obsessed with velvet furniture. And look what I found!

Yep. I actually spend my free time doing this. Welcome to my crazy. If there was a masters in finding cool stuff on Craiglist, I would get that degree. I love the hunt!

I know- I'm weird. Sometimes I actually just search 'velvet' or 'brass' on Craigslist. Just let me do this.

Also, this velvet "Red buttoned courting couch" was from a "Gentleman's Cabaret". Gross. See - this is the magic of Craiglist, you guys! You TOO can have a gross couch that was formerly in a strip club! The possibilities are endless! Dream Big!

If you see this couch - run away.
